How Hard Should a Thai Massage Be? A Pressure Guide
One of the most common complaints about Thai massage in Bangkok is "it was too hard" or "it was too soft". Almost always, this is a communication problem — not a therapist skill problem.
Here's the vocabulary that fixes it.
Level 1 — Light / relaxing
Pressure that feels like firm gliding or gentle compression. You should be able to fall asleep. Best for: first-timers, pregnancy (with prenatal-trained therapist), recovering from illness, or oil massage when you want to drift off.
Level 2 — Medium
Comfortable working pressure. You feel the muscle being worked but never grit your teeth. This is the default at most reputable Bangkok studios and ours. Best for: regular relaxation, after a normal workday, weekly maintenance.
Level 3 — Firm / "Thai authentic"
Strong pressure that releases knots. You feel intensity, you breathe through it, but it never crosses into pain. Best for: athletes, runners, desk workers with chronic shoulder/back tension, jet lag recovery on day 2.
Level 4 — Deep / sport
Elbow pressure on specific trigger points. Brief moments of "good pain" that release within 5–10 seconds. Best for: chronic injury work, very tight runners, weight-trained bodies. Always tell the therapist about any joint issues, recent surgeries, or medications (especially blood thinners) before requesting this level.
What "authentic Thai" usually means
In tourist areas, "authentic Thai" is often used as code for very firm pressure (Level 3). At Wat Po-trained studios it means traditional technique with stretching, regardless of pressure. Always confirm with your therapist what you mean.
The magic phrases for our therapists
- "A little softer please" — sao long noi (เบาลงหน่อย) - "A little stronger please" — raeng kheun noi (แรงขึ้นหน่อย) - "Right there please" — trong nan kha (ตรงนั้นค่ะ) - "Stop please" — yood (หยุด)
You can say any of these at any moment in a session. A good therapist welcomes the feedback.
A note on bruising
Light bruising the next day is acceptable for Level 4 deep work. Heavy bruising means the pressure was too much for your tissue that day — you should request lighter next time. We never bruise unless explicitly requested.
